Elix® systems: consistently pure analytical-grade water

The standard for analytical-grade water, Elix® systems were developed by Millipore to provide the quality water that is key to all laboratory applications. Elix systems are based on a 4-step purification process that uses complementary purification technologies (pretreatment, advanced reverse osmosis, electrodeionization in the patented Elix module, and bacterial reduction with an integrated 254 nm UV lamp) to produce consistently-pure Type II water from potable tap water.

A complete range of Elix systems and specially designed storage reservoirs are available to meet the needs of users who require 10 to 200 liters of pure water per day. Larger systems, based on the same principle, are available for users with needs of up to 5000 liters per day. With an Elix system as the center of a total water purification chain, Millipore provides a comprehensive package to fulfill pure water needs for a single laboratory, a suite of laboratories or an entire laboratory building.

Elix water is used every day in many sectors, including the food and beverage industries, pharmaceutical companies, chemical, cosmetic, electronics and metallurgical companies, as well as in the synthesis industry and clinical laboratory environment. Elix systems are designed to meet or exceed Type II (analytical-grade) water quality as defined by CAP, NCCLS/CLSI and ISO® 3696/BS 3997, and also comply with the Purified Water requirements from the European and U.S. Pharmacopoeias.

Characteristics of Elix system water are as follows:

Resistivity : > 5 MO cm at 25 ° C * (typically 10 to 15 MO cm)

Conductivity: < 0.2 µ S/cm at 25 ° C * (typically 0.067 to 0.10 µ S/cm)

TOC typically: < 30 ppb

Bacterial count: < 1 cfu /ml** (Elix 3/5/10)

< 10 cfu /ml** (Elix 20/35/70/100)

Water from Elix systems is ideal for a broad range of uses:

  • Microbiological media preparation

  • Buffer preparation

  • Hydroponics

  • Manufacturing chemical and biochemical reagents

  • Purified water for pharmaceutical applications
  • Feed for laboratory equipment (washing machines, clinical analyzers, stability chambers, humidifiers, autoclaves, weathering test equipment instruments and hydrogen gas generators)

  • Feed to Milli-Q ultrapure water systems

Elix systems are easy to operate and provide automatic control for the user. System functions (quality parameters, routine maintenance reminders such as pack replacement or sanitization, and alarms) can be viewed easily at each purification step on the built-in backlit display. For Elix systems used at the heart of a water distribution loop, this control applies within the Elix system itself, as well as within the external pure water distribution loop.

Elix systems also offer the advantage of easy maintenance and low running costs. A key differentiation point with RO/DI technology is that Elix technology continuously regenerates ion-exchange resins so that costly resin replacement isn't needed. Plus, the Elix module makes additional softeners unnecessary for most feedwater conditions.

Users benefit from pure water that is available on demand, with a constant flow-rate in all seasons. The systems' RO-reject recirculation loop makes it possible to save substantial quantities of water, and RO recovery is adjustable to optimize running conditions. Finally, pretreatment packs are tailored to the feedwater source and are easy to replace.

The Elix system range is supported by Millipore's Application Specialists and Field Service Support Engineers, who provide customers with accurate scientific and technical information adapted to their specific needs. Preventive maintenance plans ensure that customers get the best performance from their systems. In addition, Millipore's Qualification Program for Water Purification Systems facilitates laboratory validation procedures. Validation support is provided by trained Certified Millipore Field Service Support Engineers and includes Qualification Workbooks with Installation Qualification, Operational Qualification and Maintenance Procedures, as well as examples of Performance Qualification files and Calibration certificates.

All Elix systems are manufactured in an ISO 9001 and 14001 certified manufacturing site.
